Required shots and exams
Preventive vaccination is required for all children attending public school in West Virginia. There is no religious or philosophical exemption available. Medical exemptions can be obtained through your physician and the WVDHHR. Information on this process can be found at http://www.dhhr.wv.gov/oeps/immunization/requirements/Pages/Medical-Exemption-Resource-Center.aspx . Students who will be entering grades 7 and 12 have received multiple notices via phone messages, publications, and messages on report cards that these shots are required before they can start school in August 2017. Therefore, all shots will be required on the first day of school. Those who do not have these shots will be sent home and given an unexcused absence. In addition to shot requirements, an up-to-date physical and dental exam is required on all students entering preschool, kindergarten, 2nd grade and 7th grade. This information can be turned in during the summer by faxing it to School Health at 304-824-3033 or mailing it to us at 10 Marland Avenue, Hamlin, WV 25523.
Preventing Mosquito Borne Illnesses
With warm weather comes mosquitos, and they can cause lots of nasty illness, not to mention just plain old discomfort from painful, itching bites. To help prevent this, there are some things you can do:
Avoid being outside during the hours they are most active, dusk to dawn.
Wear long sleeves and pants of a tightly woven fabric when you are outside during these hours.
Use insect repellant with DEET.
Empty containers with standing water (birdbaths, livestock tanks, flower pots, fire pits, etc.) weekly.
Get rid of any old tires you have laying around.
Use screens in windows and doors and repair any holes in them.
